How To Start Reading Booster Gold

WHO IS BOOSTER GOLD

Booster Gold is DC’s greatest hero you’ve never heard of! Since his creation in 1986, Booster has appeared in TV shows, cartoons, video games and will be a part of the new DCU with his own MAX series and rumored appearances in the Blue Beetle animated series.

Michael Jon Carter, a loser from the 25th century steals common place technology to become a superhero. He’s also a sellout, and has proven to become comics most relevant character more and more over time.

He’s also my favorite (sorry Ben Grimm, Clark Kent, Peter Parker and Wally West. Yeah I just dropped my top five so what.)

BOOSTER GOLD VOL. 1 BY DAN JURGENS (1986-1988)

Booster Gold’s initial 1986 run, including his first appearance, is some of the most fun you can have in comics. Action, humor, heart and Sci-Fi awesomeness, it has it all. This is the run I’d recommend anyone getting into the character, because it introduces the character with all the things that make the character essential to the DCU.

It establishes his origin as the fame-seeking hero with a heart and suit of gold, and his relations to his supporting cast like his manager, Dirk and his assistant/love-interest, Trixie.

Additionally, his robot sidekick Skeets and Booster’s sister, Michelle.

Currently, you can find this story on digitally on DC Universe Infinite and otherwise, there’s no physical way to own this run unless you collect the original issues or purchase the trades second hand.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL

Greatest comic of all time. The 1987 book that has a cult following takes a sitcom approach to comics and has influenced countless books since it’s release (your favorite comic’s favorite comic?). After the Justice League is dismantled, Martian Manhunter and Batman form a new league, while unknowingly getting a new manager, Maxwell Lord (He’s in Superman! No… no other movies…)

JLI also provided the foundations for the bond between Blue Beetle II AKA Ted Kord and Booster Gold. This friendship is one of the most fundamental and best parts of the character.

You can buy the omnibus right now anywhere comics are sold.

52

In this event book for the first time Booster really turns the page, going from the sell-out showman to officially superhero.

He goes through triumph and tragedy, loss and redemption. It also introduces Rip Hunter and leads right into:

BOOSTER GOLD: NEW 52 PICKUP

Although this series is pretty much the source of Booster’s mischaracterization, it’s pretty good. Team ups and crossovers, time travel shenanigans and big action set pieces, Booster gets upgraded and turned to a centerpiece of the DCU in this series.

Vol. 2 comes out in April, but you can buy Vol. 1 on Amazon now (the book is 20 years old so not everything ages perfectly, and uhactually.com doesn’t support the actions of one of the authors of this series)

BLUE AND GOLD

This eight issue mini series was the modern re-introduction of the dynamic duo. It’s a fun read and takes the character back to basics.

It’s on Amazon too.

CONCLUSION

I like Booster Gold. Please read Booster Gold.
