All seven episodes of season one in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos have aired on Max, and the series has been officially announced to be renewed for season two. It’s funny, raunchy and action-packed and acts as the prelude to the new DCU that officially kicks off with July’s Superman, but are the Commandos worth your time? As someone who woke up twenty minutes earlier for 6 weeks every thursday to watch them, I’ll tell you.
THE GOOD
Honestly, if you’re a fan of DC or you enjoyed James Gunn’s other superhero works- this is probably right up your alley. It’s the same old Gunn: Needle drops, Explosions and a found family narrative. The voice acting is A+, with Indira Varma, Frank Grillo and David Harbour all delivering great performances. The characters are all written wonderfully, with even the most unlikeable characters like Frankenstein or Dr. Phosphorus being characters you love-to-hate. It definitely gets you wanting to explore the DC world more. The animation is fluid and great, and the character designs are entirely unique.
THE BAD
The plot of the shown gets so convoluted by episode six, with so many plotlines going unresolved until the final five minutes in a scene that feels like a studio mandate reminding Gunn that he forgot to finish the season’s story, except for the fact that there is no studio mandate because Gunn runs the studio. The show ends up feeling vague and unfinished by the end, and becomes something resembling a Diet Peacemaker or a The Suicide Squad Jr.
IN CONCLUSION
Do you like DC? Go watch it.
If not? Wait for Superman.
Bye!
