"What nerds say"

What’s Canon to the DCU?

Uh, Actually…

Unless you’re James Gunn, no one knows. But, over the three years he has been a Co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s tried explaining it and has only made it more confusing. Good news- I think I’ve got it figured out

REBOOT OR NAH?

The DCU is completely new and a full reboot, but is carrying over a select few castings from the DCEU (or Snyderverse): Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, John Cena as Peacemaker and Xolo Mariduena as Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)

One of the main subplots of the new DCU will stem as a follow up to Gunn’s 2021 ‘The Suicide Squad’, starting with the first project of the DCU “Creature Commandos”. This rule has been established by Gunn though: “There are references to things that happened in the past. And those references then become canon in the DCU because we mention them.” So, for example, when Project Starfish or Corto Maltese is mentioned in any of the upcoming DCU projects, I would assume The Suicide Squad is mostly canon. I would also say it is safe to say if there’s any fans of the characters that didn’t make it out of The Suicide Squad (R.I.P Captain Boomerang, you were brighter than the sun) that they are not coming back, as Rick Flag Sr. will reference his son’s death in the upcoming Creature Commandos series

ADDRESSING THE ELEPHANT IN THE MULTIVERSE

“Peacemaker, what a joke. ”

Peacemaker, the hit 2022 Max series, had a cameo of the DCEU/Snyderverse Justice League in the season one finale. It was awesome, but now raises countless issues. It would be fine if they were all faceless cameos, because then you can just say “Oh, that’s just Corenswet’s Superman” now, but Ezra Miller’s Flash and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman had speaking roles and that complicate things a whole metric butt ton, as they aren’t returning as these roles (Expect Momoa to return as your favorite galactic bounty hunting main man though.)

Gunn hasn’t spoken on this yet, but for now I would just put generic place holders or imagine Superman (2025)’s new heroes in the place of it, like Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner or Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific (G.O.A.T. Incoming)

JLI MUCH?

Blue Beetle, the most underrated CBM, establishes every Blue Beetle from past incarnations, especially Ted Kord.

Ted Kord is known for a lot of things hopefully, but most often for his totalllyyyyy  non-romantic bromance with Booster Gold. #morelikeboostergoat. I LOVE Booster Gold. Back on track- Ted Kord’s main part of the comics was being part of the cult classic 80’s Justice League International, a UN backed, ragtag new incarnation of the Justice League led by Martian Manhunter and backed by Maxwell Lord.

Honestly, I would assume the movie is canon, as the upcoming anime-inspired series is just adapting the storyline for the imagines film sequels for a different format, canon to the DCU. Although, if Jaime Reyes were to be friends with a younger Booster and replace Ted, I would be very happy.

Booster Gold is ideally younger than Superman. That’s how it was in the comics, and that’s the way it is in MY household. This isn’t a Booster Gold house, it’s a Booster Gold home.

CLOSING STATEMENTS

uhhhh that’s it pretty much. If you’re confused, so is Gunn. Pretty much The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and Blue Beetle are canon if you took away the cameos. Also, watch Creature Commandos this December and remember to read your daily JLI/Booster Gold/Post Crisis comic.
